Enhancing Vuser Scripts

1.   You define transactions to measure the performance of the server. Each transaction measures the time it takes for the server to respond to specified Vuser requests 2.   You configure multiple Vusers to act simultaneously by creating a rendezvous point. 3.   Rendezvous points are only effective in Action section(s)—not init or end . 4.   lr_get_attrib_string - Returns a command line parameter string. 5.   lr_get_host_name - Returns the name of the machine running the Vuser script. 6.   lr_get_master_host_name - Returns the name of the machine running the Controller. Not applicable when working with the HP Business Availability Center. 7.   lr_whoami - Returns the name of a Vuser executing thescript. 8.   lr_debug_message - Sends a debug message to the Output window or the Business Process Monitor log file. 9.   lr_error_message - Sends an error message to the Output window or the Business Proce...

How to find the number of physical CPUs in Linux

1. How many physical CPUs does the server have? 2. How many cores on each CPU? Duo/Quad In Linux it’s actually quite easy to get this info. You could go through the /var/log/dmesg file or the /proc/cpuinfo file. We’ll look at the /proc/cpuinfo file. Output of cat /proc/cpuinfo: processor       : 0 vendor_id       : GenuineIntel cpu family      : 6 model           : 26 model name      : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU           X5570  @ 2.93GHz stepping        : 5 cpu MHz         : 2933.548 cache size      : 8192 KB physical id     : 1 siblings        : 8 core id         : 0 cpu...

Glance Tool usage to get CPU utilization on Server

Glance: Glance is the best tool for checking memmory usage, as it provides the complete information. The various tools report different numbers because they disagree about which regions to report as part of the size and how to count shared memory regions. We can also obtain CPU Utilization and Disk Utilization as shown in the output. $ glance --h Usage: glance [-?|-h|-g|-A|-c|-m|-d|-i|-u|-w|-l|-t|-a|-N|-T|-H]               [-j interval] [-nice nice_value] [-nosort] [-lock]               [-p [dest_device]] [-f dest_file] [-maxpages num_pages]               [-no_fkeys]               [-advis[eo]r_off | -advis[eo]r_only] [-iterations count]               [-...

Planning an Effective Load Test

Planning an Effective Load Test (Design Phase): Main activites in Design Phase can be of the following : Gather Team Define Goals Outline Business Processes Define User Profiles Document Business Processes Define Test Data Management Procedures Outline Monitors Document Team Business Analysts – Provide Usage Analysis of System Under Test (SUT) Performance Engineers – Performs Business Process (BP) scripting and load scenarios executions System Architect – Provides blueprint of the SUT System Components SMEs – Provides Monitoring aspects of SUT components Project Managers and Stakeholders – Keeping things running on track. Goals : Conceptual Goals – What are we trying to achieve? • Transaction Response Time of some Mission Critical operations – Is the  transaction fast enough? • SUT Environment Benchmarking – Are servers, network, software, etc. compatible? Define Goals: The first step is to channel general application performance expectations into conceptual goals. Conce...
